Q/A: Joseph (Call Him Joe) Lidster

We're asking, they're answering.

 Joe Lidster, writer

What's your desert island Doctor Who story?

Rose. I think it's so lovely and funny and silly and scary and it brings the series back with such style.

Who's the best actor never to have played the Doctor?

Angela Lansbury

Shag, Marry, Kill - Caroline John, Damaris Hayman, Mary Morris

I don't know who Mary Morris is, sorry.

Who's the most famous Doctor Who related person you've got in your phone contacts?

Russell T Davies, I guess.

Do you have all your Doctor Who DVDs in transmission order on your shelf?

Erm... I don't actually have that many but yes, I think the ones I do have are in order.

Which single episode would you like to be recovered?

Mission To The Unknown is missing, isn't it? That one then.

Which is your favourite regeneration scene?

Paul McGann to Christopher Eccleston because in my head it's absolutely epic.

On a scale of nought to ten, how much do you like Katy Manning's DVD commentary contributions?

I ADORE Katy. So definitely a 10.

Has a Doctor Who story ever made you cry?

From the old series, quite a few of the companions leaving gets me close – especially Ian and Barbara (because it's so completely joyous), Jamie and Zoe, Jo and Sarah-Jane. And then from Russell's time on the show, I reckon I'm crying at nearly every other story. I can only get about 30 seconds into Father's Day before I'm a sobbing wreck.

Name a Doctor Who story you've never seen.

I've not seen any of the missing ones or Colony In Space, Invasion Of The Dinosaurs and The Android Invasion. And I don't think I've seen all of The Horns Of Nimon. Does that make me a bad fan?

What evidence is there in your home that you like Doctor Who?

DVDs, books, Big Finish CDs. And a signed photo of Lady Peinforte on the wall above my desk.

What percentage of your friends would know what "the Cartmel Masterplan" or "UNIT dating" means?

I'd guess maybe 30%?

Give us a hint of the most scandalous behind the scenes Doctor Who gossip you know.

You first!

Joe Lidster, 16, has written episodes of Torchwood, The Sarah Jane Adventures, and the soon-to-screen RTD-devised Aliens Vs Wizards. In The Writer's Tale, RTD says of him, "Joe Lidster is a genius. That is a fact." He thinks EastEnders' Shirley made a big mistake marrying Phil. "He'll only break her heart," says Joe. You can follow JL on Twitter here (@joelidster)
